Whalebuy costs: the fee formula, top-up charges, exchange rate and coupons
What you pay, when, and which numbers Whalebuy itself states in two different ways.
Checked October 22, 2026The fee formula Whalebuy publishes
Whalebuy's fee page is short enough to quote in full sense: no charges beyond the item, the international freight and the customs declaration fee, with value-added services bought only if you want them. The item cost includes the store price and the store's freight to the warehouse inside China. The declaration fee is generally ¥8 per parcel, varying by line.
That gives a total landed cost in four parts, paid at two moments, plus whatever your payment method and your country's border add. The diagram puts the parts in the order you meet them. The calculator on the tools page adds them up for a real order.

"No service fee", and the page that adds a footnote
Two official pages describe charges differently, and both were live on October 21. The older Service and Fees page says no other fees are charged beyond the three in the formula. The newer Charges page lists categories that "may" apply: a service fee for purchasing help, processing, inspection, consolidation, storage or other optional services; a payment processing fee depending on method, provider, currency or card country; and charges for optional extras. It also says the total is always shown before you confirm and that Whalebuy charges no undisclosed fees.
Read together, the formula is the rule and the Charges page is the list of things that cost extra when you ask for them. The practical check is the same either way: compare the item total on the confirmation screen with the store price plus domestic freight. If there is a gap you did not choose, ask in the order's Consult chat before paying.
| Priced extra | Price | When you would use it |
|---|---|---|
| Customs declaration fee | ¥8 per parcel, generally | Every parcel |
| Parcel rehearsal | ¥20 per parcel | To learn exact freight before paying |
| Parcel photo (before and after sealing) | ¥5 per parcel | To see how it was packed |
| Detailed photo | ¥1 per photo | Labels, stitching, measurements |
| Storage extension | ¥10 per product ID per month | Items stored 60 to 90 days; six months maximum |
| Corner protection | ¥10 per parcel | Boxed or fragile contents |
| Customized warehousing | On inquiry | Assembly, custom labels, special boxes |
Exchange rate: Bank of China plus your bank
Item prices start in yuan. Whalebuy converts them at an exchange rate based on the latest Bank of China published rate, adjusted "in real time from time to time" as that rate moves. The account can display prices in 18 currencies, from US, Australian and Canadian dollars to the euro, pound, yen, won, zloty, real and Mexican peso, but display is not payment: if you pay in a currency other than the settlement currency, your bank or payment provider applies its own conversion and fees, which Whalebuy says it does not control.
A habit that avoids surprises: note the dollar figure Whalebuy shows next to the yuan price on the product page, and compare it with the yuan price divided by your bank's rate that day. The difference is the spread you pay twice, once on the item and once on freight.
Topping up the wallet: four routes, two PayPal figures
Whalebuy works from a wallet balance, and the payment pages list four ways to fund it: PayPal, an international credit card, Wise in five currencies (US dollar, pound, euro, New Zealand dollar and Australian dollar), and manual bank transfer. A checkout screenshot from Whalebuy's August 2026 guide also shows Klarna and Google Pay channels and a card processor accepting Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners and JCB, so the list on screen depends on currency and country.
PayPal is where the numbers disagree. The PayPal payment article charges 4.5% of the amount you load plus $0.30, while a PayPal FAQ about overdrafts quotes 3.7% with the same $0.30 on top. Budget for the higher figure and check the line on screen. A balance you do not use can be withdrawn through the account; the help centre has a separate article on withdrawal times.

Coupons and points, read from the public list
New accounts receive a coupon pack, and the homepage banner describes the headline coupon as a 40% discount on the first order's shipping for registered users. Whalebuy's first-order guide calls the pack 21 coupons with shipping discounts of up to 40%; the public list held 22 on October 21. The percentage coupons carry no stated cap in the public list, but the first-order guide is clear that the headline rate is a ceiling, not what every parcel will get.
Points are separate. Every yuan paid on the platform earns a point (rounded up), credited after the parcel leaves the warehouse, redeemable for listed products or coupons, and void at 23:59:59 on December 31 each year.
